Bob Seger Still Running Against The Wind On Anniversary Of 1980 Classic

Artist:

Dallas, TX - February 11, 2015.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind Historys Greatest Rock Bands catches up with Detroits favored son and RocknRoll Hall of Famer Bob Seger on the 35th anniversary of his classic album Against The Wind.

After over a decade of sweatin it out on the road, as documented on the live album  Live Bullet, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet band finally had their breakout with 1976s Night Moves followed by Stranger In Town in 1978, capping off a phenomenal end to the decade.

The sheer height to which Bob Segers star had risen was put on full display when Against the Wind unseated Pink Floyds epic The Wall album for the # 1 spot on the Billboard chart upon release in February 1980, producing the hits Fire Lake, Youll Accompny Me, and title track Against the Wind.

Superstardom, however, was challenging for Seger. Bob admits to InTheStudio host Redbeard how he was able to find his way after selling over 17 million albums in four short years.

I think (my) reaction to stardom was very uncomfortable from 76 thru 79, because I had NO reaction (from record execs) for the twelve years prior to that. I was very suspicious throughout that period... I was probably not the best person to be around unless you were really in my inner circle... I was quite closed off.  I think it wasnt until 1980 that I really opened up. And thats why I have such fond memories of Against the Wind. - Bob Seger

The 90s First Supergroup: Damn Yankees Reflect on 'InTheStudio'

Artist:

The 90s First Supergroup: Damn Yankees - Jack Blades, Tommy Shaw, Ted Nugent Remember

Dallas, TX - January 29, 2015.  North American syndicated Rock radio show website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind Historys Greatest Rock Bands join Tommy Shaw, Jack Blades, Michael Cartellone, and Ted Nugent in recalling their excellent adventure in Damn Yankees twenty-five years ago.

The Nineties first supergroup actually lived up to the hype. The Damn Yankees self-titled debut sold a whopping two million copies off the backs of melodic rockers Coming of Age, Runaway, Come Again and the soaring # 3 hit single High Enough. But how did these guys come together in the first place?

Each frontman had a successful rock pedigree: Motor City MadmanTed Nugent, STYX singer/songwriter/ guitarist Tommy Shaw, and  Night Ranger singer/songwriter/bass player Jack Blades. InTheStudio host Redbeard gets the full story on how the group united and spent the next five years making records and touring constantly.  It was a unique musical partnership that worked both personally and professionally.

Jack Blades : When Tommy & I first started singing, suddenly we realized that we were phrasing the same, harmonizing, coming up with the same vocal ideas. It was if we had sung together for ten years.

Tommy Shaw: The first day of recording Nugent announced that he was taking all of us to hunt bear. So the next morning we showed up barenaked.

Ted Nugent:Im from the Motor City. Were the Murder Capital of America not because were more violent. Its because were better shots.

InTheStudio - RUSH Creates Permanent Waves With Eighth Album

Artist:

RUSH Creates Permanent Waves With Eighth Album
Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Neil Peart Examine US Radio Breakthrough

Dallas, TX - January 27, 2015.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind Historys Greatest Rock Bands journeys back to a pivotal moment in the history of the band Rush to examine the 1980 release of Permanent Waves.

Four years before the dawn of MTV and almost two decades before the internet revolutionized the music industry, Rush sold more than a million copies of 1978s Hemispheres  album and sold out 10,000 seat arenas primarily on word-of-mouth and relentless touring.

The hard rock trio faced obstacles at every turn and at every phase of their career, but the adversity only seemed to increase the collective resolve of Rush. 1980 would be a turning point and game changer. Rush, who had been mean spiritedly criticized by the rock press and ignored by the majority of radio in the western hemisphere would deliver Permanent Waves, the breakthrough that would unleash a streamlined, more modern-sounding Rush and deliver their first legitimate hits The Spirit of the Radio and Free Will. Geddy Lee shares with InTheStudio host Redbeard the deliberate move Rush made musically 35 years ago.

We were happy with the challenge to write twenty minute pieces... Wed done it a number of times, and we felt it was almost becoming a cross to bear for us in a way. It was almost limiting us...We sort of tried to get back to our original desires as songwriters. I think we wanted to become a little more concise.  - Geddy Lee

Decibel Geek - Michael Wagener on SKID ROW

Artist:

Producer Michael Wagener Looks Back on Slave to the Grind (AUDO)
Famed rock/metal producer Michael Wagener appears on the latest episode of the Decibel Geek podcast to reflect on his experience producing Skid Row’s ‘Slave to the Grind’ for their Albums Unleashed series.

Slave to the Grind, recorded at New River Studios in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Scream Studios in Studio City, CA, made history on June 11, 1991 when it became the first heavy metal album to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 during the Soundscan era. In this discussion, Wagener details the process of making the album including pre-production that took place in New Jersey, where things got off to a promising start:

“Before we went to Florida, we went into a fairly big studio in Jersey and pretty much recorded the whole record. We made a good demo so to speak. The funny thing is, the song ‘Slave to the Grind’ is from that session. It was recorded and mixed in an hour; and that’s what you’re hearing on the record. It was not even remixed. One hour, it was recorded. Everything is live on there.”

The band then headed to Florida to find a suitable studio to record the album. In this conversation, Wagener describes some of the excess that went on while the band was in the Sunshine State:

“That trip is unforgettable man. It was just crazy. We hung out with Saigon Kick and everybody got extremely drunk. It was a cool weekend. It was very quiet in the limo on the way back to the airport. Heads down, you know? I remember one of the guys puking out the window of the limo. And, then, I see the car behind us putting on the wipers (laughs). It’s rock and roll, man.”

Notable of the album, Slave to the Grind presents a heavier, darker tone in music and in lyrics. In this hour-plus audio discussion, Michael Wagener details the process behind that decision and the effect it had on sales:

“That was the plan. Every band at the time would say ‘Oh our next album is way heavier’ but we did it. We followed that route. Let’s stick to being Skid Row but let’s make it a little tougher, a little harder. We still had the ballads on there. They were maybe not quite as sappy as on the first record but it also didn’t sell as many copies as the first record because the housewives that like the ballads, they’re buying the records, but it’s still an amazing album.”

While the early 90’s were a period of great success for Skid Row, as many know, the ensuing years provided struggle professionally and personally as a split formed in the band with vocalist, Sebastian Bach, being fired in late 1996. Asked about the eventual animosity that would lead to the split, Wagener offers:

“Young kids becoming extremely famous; that goes to your head. All of a sudden you’re invincible and stuff just happens. And if they think they’re invincible, they do things that might not really work in the end. I think some of that was going on. It wasn’t really good for the band; some of the stuff that was said about record companies, executives, and stuff like that. And then Snake and Rachel had to make up for it and go play golf with the guys y’know? And it got to the point that it got so out of hand that they said ‘You know what? Forget it’ It’s not worth it anymore and all that anger and all that animosity and stuff that we have to deal with; it’s not worth it.’ I talked to Rachel 3 or 4 years later (because I did more records with them) and I said ‘Is it ever gonna happen again?’ and he said ‘No. As long as I have a slice of bread on my table, no.’ I think we could have one at least 2 more massive albums with Skid Row but to them their sanity was more important.”

Artist:

Chicago II Anoints Band As Hit Machine
Founding Member Robert Lamm Recalls Sophomore Effort

Dallas, TX - January 6, 2015.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind Historys Greatest Rock Bands speaks to Chicago founding member Robert Lamm on the anniversary of the double album musical colossus Chicago II.

February of 1970, not even a year after their debut album Chicago Transit Authority, the band had shortened their name but not their fourteen-legged lineup. As former Bob Dylan sideman and Blood, Sweat and Tears founder Al Kooper told Lamm, Chicagos sound was the perfect marriage of brass and rock.

Chicago, born out of their city namesake also known as the Second City, made the bold Chicago II, a two disc set that would go on to sell a record two million albums and spawn their first Top 5 hit 25 or 6 to 4 and two Top 10 singles Colour My World and Make Me Smile.

Speaking with InTheStudio host Redbeard, keyboardist, singer, songwriter Robert Lamm sheds light on how three lead singers managed to front just one band.

For most of the time that we were writing songs, we never thought about what key (its in), is it going to be right for whoevers going to sing it.  We would basically write the song and see how far each one of us could go. So part of the idea about sharing lead vocals was necessity. (laughs).  - Robert Lamm

Footnote: after over 120,000,000 albums sold, the second biggest selling artist in America (behind only the Beach Boys) is still not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

DON DOKKEN and GEORGE LYNCH Dispute 'Breaking The Chains'

Artist:

On recent episode of THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, guitarist George Lynch and vocalist Don Dokken have traded barbs regarding their debut release in Dokken, BREAKING THE CHAINS. On the December 6th edition of THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, Lynch was asked about which album he wishes he could take out of his catalog, to which he answered BREAKING THE CHAINS. Below is what Lynch had to say:

GEORGE LYNCH: I was going to say BREAKING THE CHAINS, quite honestly.

CLASSIC METAL SHOW: Really? You don't like BREAKING THE CHAINS?

GEORGE LYNCH: I did like it when we originally recorded it, but then (Don) Dokken got ahold of it and destroyed it. He basically sent us home from Europe and said, "OK guys, we're done. I'm just going to stay back and hang out with my girlfriend." I was thinking, "OK." What he did was he stayed in the studio when we were gone and had his way with the record, which was (to) pump up all the vocals, take all my guitars out. Destroy the mix. It just sounded weak and wimpy. It just killed it. It was actually pretty muscular and pretty tough when we were in the studio. It was down in the basement at Dierk's studio in Germany. The Scorpions were upstairs. Rory Gallagher was upstairs. These guys wanted to hear what was going on, so they would bring down the guitar player from Scorpions and Rory. They would sit there. I was so proud of my guitar tracks. Me and Michael Wagoner were holed up there. We'd board the place up. We wouldn't let anybody in. I had a 24 track tube machine and an MC500 board. I had one of Richie Blackmore's old cabinets and a Rangemaster treble booster and my Tiger guitar. It sounded so good. It was the first record I'd ever done, really, so we were committed to making a statement. Quite honestly, the sound was just unbelievable. Then when it was all done, he did what he did to it and he killed it. It's very hard for me to listen to because of that, because I knew what it was and nobody will ever hear that unfortunately.

Vocalist Don Dokken appeared on January 3rd edition of THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, and was asked about Lynch's claims that Don stayed behind and remixed the record behind his back. Don's response is below:

CLASSIC METAL SHOW: We talked to George (Lynch) a month ago, and he said that with BREAKING THE CHAINS, you stayed behind in Germany and remixed the record behind his back.

DON DOKKEN: That's a typical George Lynch statement. No, it wasn't Bob (Ludwig, engineer). I love that he says, "behind his back". I guess George forgot that when we did BREAKING THE CHAINS, he wasn't in the band. For the record...George...what is he smoking? He must be smoking something.  When I did BREAKING THE CHAINS, it was a solo record deal. George was not in the band. Mick was not in the band. Juan Crocier's picture is on the album, but he didn't play on it. Peter Baltes did because Juan missed the deadline to get to Germany. I had Peter play the bass tracks. It was a solo album, and the album came out originally in Germany, and it was called "Don Dokken BREAKING THE CHAINS". I have a copy. It's a picture of me on the cover and it says "Don Dokken". Now, George...I asked him to be in the band. He said no. I asked Mick if he wanted to be in the band. He said no. They were going to do something else. They were going to do Exciter. So for him to say "behind our back", he was paid $2500 to play on the record and that's it. He had nothing to do with Dokken. He wasn't in the band. He'd just come to Germany. We did a little tour. I paid him. He went back. He thought he was going to join Ozzy. That didn't work out. So he basically had nowhere to go, no band, and he was broke. That;'s when he came back and said, "I want to be in the band", because Mick had decided to come and play with me. To say that I did anything "behind his back", I don't know what that means because he wasn't in the band. He had nothing to do with Dokken. The guy is high.

38 SPECIAL Founding Members Jeff Carlisi, Donnie Van Zant Take Aim on '80s Best

Artist:

38 Special Founding Members Jeff Carlisi, Donnie Van Zant Take Aim on '80s Best

Dallas, TX - January 2, 2015.  North American syndicated Rock radio program and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands  heads south to get the 38 Special story from founding members Jeff Carlisi and Donnie Van Zant on the 35th anniversary of their breakthrough album Rockin' Into The Night.

Hailing from the Southern Rock capital of the world, Jacksonville, Florida, and with the connection to Ronnie Van Zant of Southern Rock royalty Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special found themselves in an advantageous position.  But after two albums, not much had materialized until the release of 1980's breakthrough Rockin' Into The Night and the platinum follow-ups, 1981's Wild-Eyed Southern Boys and 1982's Special Forces.

Jeff Carlisi shares with InTheStudio host Redbeard how 38 Special drew a bead on the musical bullseye and came into their own with hits including 'Rockin' Into the Night','Hold On Loosely','Fantasy Girl', and 'Caught Up in You'.

'38 Special found a bit of a focus with the third album Rockin' Into The Night and then Wild-Eyed Southern Boys , which was the first platinum record for the band. We had finally developed a style of music that was not typically Southern in the sense of three chord shuffles or those type of things, but it was the attitude, the way Southern musicians approached there music.' - Jeff Carlisi
